An interesting interview with author Jeffrey Edward Green
Green is the author of a 2024 book, Bob Dylan: Prophet without God. He was interviewed recently by Nick Gillespie on Reason TV. I found this interview deep AND wideranging, with lots of Dylan details and quotes and deep dives—the kind of insight that many Dylan-enthusiasts live for—very rewarding, with lots of thoughts about Dylan and politics that will help you appreciate the early 60s many of us have just seen reenacted in A Complete Unknown. Dylan and politics in that period also informs us about the importance of Suze Rotolo. Teasers: the book discusses Dylan’s cultural place. We learn that there are three values that inform prophets: adherence to God, social justice, or individual freedom and that prophets usually say we can have all three at once or they choose one, leaving the others to the side. What is special about Dylan? You guessed it: he puts the three values in converstation with each other—and uniquely shows, through his many guises, that the prophetic values are often in conflict with each other.
